Remember the Trojans The Dyersburg High School football team put together a powerful 2005 season, going 10-0 during the regular campaign. The Trojans, coached by James Counce, who was named a Tennessee Titan Coach of the Week following a 28-12 victory at Obion County, averaged 30 points per contest while giving up a total of only 12 per game on average.
DHS went into the playoffs filled with confidence, but their dream season ended Nov. 4, 2005, with a heartbreaking loss to Sheffield, 26-23.
Fit for Everyone
If you want to be fit, join the YMCA of Dyer County.
The 25,000-square-foot complex in downtown Dyersburg opened in January 2002. One of its highlights is a Ready To Be Fit room for beginners who might feel self-conscious about joining a health club. The room has its own exercise and weight equipment plus a staff member who helps
the newcomers.
The Y also has a Kid Zone with TV, air hockey and computer games for youngsters
6 and older, as well as a nursery.
Reelly
Beautiful
Like the birds that migrate here, visitors from all over the world flock to Reelfoot Lake.
Located 35 miles north of Dyersburg in Lake County, the lake is the winter home to bald eagles and about 235 other species of birds.
The 15,500-acre lake also offers year-round fishing for largemouth bass, bream and crappie.
Reelfoot was actually created in 1811 when a series of earthquakes dramatically altered the landscape
of the area.
Play a Round in D’burg
It costs as little as $10 per round to play at Dyersburg Municipal Golf Course.
The par 71 course hosts more than 25,000 rounds annually and has been listed as one of the best municipal courses in the country by Golf Digest. Besides a challenging course, it has a spacious clubhouse, pro shop, driving range and dining room.
Dyersburg Municipal also features a variety of youth programs. For example, in the summer, students can golf
all day for $5.

the Dyersburg Community Concert Association.
Besides three concerts in Dyersburg each year, members can attend similar performances in the surrounding communities of Union City, Martin, Paducah and Murray, Ky. Performances are by established musicians and band members, and
the yearlong series stages 25 shows in all.
Forecast: Fair
It’s fair to say that the Dyer County Fair
is one of the most popular annual events
in northwest Tennessee.
The fair actually began in 1880 but was shut down during the Great Depression and World War II. It restarted in 1947 and has been held every year since.
The fair features typical attractions such as beauty pageants, livestock contests, arts and crafts, games and rides, along with fun events like kids wrestling with greased pigs as well as tykes riding wooly sheep in a “mutton-busting contest.”
The fun takes place for six days starting Labor Day. A Kids’ Day
is always held on a Friday. |
